What made you want to apply to your course and to Leeds?

The Theatre and Performance course at the University of Leeds stood out from other universities I applied for as it offered a combination of practical and theory. You not only gain a knowledge of the conventional styles of drama but also explore other areas of research which allows you to broaden your understanding of the subject.

What is it that makes you passionate about your area of study?

My passion for theatre has been ingrained in me from a young age from taking part in school productions and practicing dance and singing from a young age. Not only has Leeds built my passion further but it has pushed me to try all types of acting and made me improve in ways I didn’t know was within my capabilities.

What aspects of the course do you enjoy the most?

The broad selection of module options has meant I have been able to study multiple aspects of the arts and even delve into subjects unrelated to theatre. The arts marketing module gave me an insight into what a business degree may look like and has inspired me to look at masters degrees related to business and marketing. This for me is very exciting and has given my useful skills I will definitely find helpful in the workplace.

What would you say about Leeds as a city?

Being a vibrant hub of culture and exciting opportunities, Leeds for any theatre student is an amazing place to be. The city will never bore you, there are music, comedy, theatre and similar events happening almost daily within the area. Being a home for 30,000 students you meet people from all areas of the world and the fun never stops.

What would you say about the learning facilities in your School and at the University in general?

The facilities available to the theatre and performance students are second to none, bringing professional industry elements to the practical side of the course. The technical elements of the spaces available brings our performances to life and the technical staff are willing to go above and beyond to portray any artistic vision you can imagine.

Have you taken part in any activities outside of your studies (e.g. student societies, course rep, student intern, local groups/initiatives)?

I have been a part of three societies in total; two being musical theatre related and the other being hockey. This not only has allowed me to make friends for life but has also ensured I have kept up an active and enjoyable lifestyle since joining university. It is important to realise that university is what you put in and the societies offer you experiences which will make your university career.

The societies for me have been the best part of my university experience so far and I would recommend to anyone to go along to the society fairs to have a look at what’s on offer and try something new – you may never have the opportunity to do so again.

What would you say to anyone thinking of applying to your course?

This course will offer you opportunities which are important you take full advantage of. The rewards you get from the course are phenomenal, it is important to put 100% into whatever task is thrown at you. You will be offered support from caring staff who will encourage you to be the best version of yourself, and it is an experience which sets itself aside from a regular drama degree. No session is the same and you are constantly inspired alongside wonderful like-minded people who will be your friends for life.

Tell us about your accommodation and your experience of living in Leeds

In my first year I lived in the Oxley residences with five other students. I was lucky enough to live with people who ended up being some of my best friends and it was comforting us all being in the same position of starting university together, sharing an experience which can seem intimidating. The rooms were a perfect size to allow privacy but a communal kitchen area kept us social and created a homely feel to the flat.

What do you plan to do once you’ve finished your course, and how do you think the skills and knowledge you’ve developed at Leeds will help with these plans?

The great thing about the course is it has made me realise I have the capability to achieve anything I put my mind to. My options once I leave range from applying to drama school, doing a masters or even travelling abroad to find an internship or similar prospects. I am yet to decide which route I will take but I look forward to what the future may hold.
