Ms Kashmir Kaur (SFHEA)

Profile

I have taught English for Academic Purposes (EAP) to both postgraduate and undergraduate students at the University of Leeds since October 2008. My experience at Leeds includes teaching in China (the first 7 weeks of Semester One 2016-2019) developing and teaching on the joint school project between the Leeds Engineering and Physical Sciences Faculty and the South-West Jiaotong University in Chengdu. Over the years, I have led, developed and taught on a number of courses e.g. Level 2 Academic English for Postgraduate Studies (AEPS), Academic Communication, Language in Context Sustainability Module, AEPS PGR and Language for Engineering. Currently, I’m the module lead for the Foreign Language Assistants’ English Language Course and the In-sessional lead for the School of Earth and Environment and the Institute of Transport.

I am also a member of the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures’ Athena Swan Self-Assessment Team and a mentor on the University of Leeds Mentoring Programme. Previously, I have been a member of the Faculty’s Decolonising Student Education Working Group and the Staff Sustainability Architect for the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies.

My teaching prior to Leeds includes Academic English at Durham University. Additionally, I have taught in Beirut for the British Council where I was involved in developing and delivering continuing professional development training to Palestinian and Lebanese teachers with respect to teaching content in the medium of English.

Prior to moving into the education sector, I spent several years working in the broadcasting industry. My time in television gave me extensive research and media experience and an in-depth knowledge of programme making particularly in the documentaries, features and factual entertainment departments.

Responsibilities

  • In-sessional Lead for School of Earth and Environment and Institute of Transport
  • Programme Director of Foreign Language Assistants' Language Course

Research interests

My research interests in education are varied. They intersect student identity and engagement, internationalisation including aspects such as Critical EAP, ‘criticality’ in higher education, dialogic feedback, self-directed learning and ‘decolonising' student education.
