Profile
I am a lecturer in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) at the University of Leeds, where I focus on supporting student transition, engagement and belonging in higher education. My work is informed by a strong interest in how students experience university life beyond the classroom, particularly during key transition points such as pre-sessional study.
I have worked at the University of Leeds for 16 years. Over this time, I have contributed to a wide range of provision, including:
- pre-sessional and in-sessional EAP courses
- undergraduate and postgraduate programmes
- short intensive courses and year-round provision
I have also been involved in the design and delivery of discipline-specific EAP, including work with the School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering. In addition, I have contributed to widening participation and outreach through work with initiatives such as the University’s Students Into Schools placement programme.
Prior to and alongside my work at Leeds, I have taught English to speakers of other languages both internationally and in the UK. This includes experience in ESOL contexts and early years language teaching, as well as work on a range of courses supporting learners with diverse linguistic and educational backgrounds.
Research interests
My research explores student belonging, engagement and identity in higher education, with a focus on ‘international’ students and pre-sessional contexts. I am especially interested in how institutional structures and informal learning opportunities influence students’ sense of connection and success.
Key areas of interest include:
- student belonging and ‘home-making’ in higher education
- extracurricular engagement and informal learning
- identity, participation and motivation
- transition into UK higher education
- inclusive and alternative award frameworks
