Helen Sadig

An alumna of the University of Leeds, I examined IELTS for UCLES, and taught general English and EAP in Italy, Greece and Poland before joining the university in 2000. I have led credit-bearing modules as well as in-sessional, pre-sessional and bespoke language courses, teaching at UG, PGT and PGR levels. As programme leader for ELU, I had academic responsibility for all credit-bearing ELU modules and represented the Language Centre on the LCS Taught Student Education Committee.

I am currently on secondment to the Leeds Institute for Teaching Excellence (LITE) as an Excellence and Innovation Fellow. I am also a mentor on the Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PGCAP) and hold external examining positions on the International Foundation Programme at SOAS, University of London (2015-19) and BA Modern Languages at Queen Mary University of London (2018-22).

Research interests

My current research is being conducted as part of my LITE fellowship in collaboration with Cecile De Cat (Linguistics & Phonetics) for the project: Building a civic curriculum: Helping local schools better support EAL children through enhanced student impact and teacher CPD. I am designing a language training programme to maximise the effectiveness of the Students into Schools scheme in terms of EAL support, and offering that training as a CPD opportunity for practitioners in schools. This project aims to achieve real civic impact in the local community and place language support firmly at the centre of the Student into Schools agenda.

I have led the Academic Study Skills, English for Communication and English for Academic Study ELU modules, and Methodology in Language Teaching and Language Teaching in Practice on the MA Linguistics & ELT Programme. I have also designed and led bespoke language training courses for a wide range of student cohorts including trainee teachers from Hong Kong Baptist University and international GPs in the Yorkshire & Humber region preparing for their Clinical Skills Assessment (CSA) examination.
