Dr Duncan Wheeler selected for induction into the Spanish Academy of Stage Arts

Dr Duncan Wheeler, Associate Professor in Spanish Studies, has been selected for induction into the Spanish Academy of Stage Arts in recognition of his research into and promotion of Spanish theatre.

The Spanish Academy of Stage Arts is a cultural organisation committed to developing and promoting the performing arts in Spain, both nationally and internationally. Dr Wheeler was selected in recognition of his contributions in this area, and is the first non-Hispanic academic to be awarded this prestigious honour. His research interests are varied, but often relate to the interrelationship between cultural institutions, art, politics and memory in contemporary and Early-Modern Spain.

Speaking of his achievement, Dr Wheeler said that it is "a huge privilege to be acknowledged by a national institution of this kind, dedicated to protecting the interests of one of the world’s great theatrical traditions, which is fortunately increasingly visible on UK stages through such initiatives as the Spanish Theatre Company in London or the Spanish National Classical Theatre Company’s visit to Leeds".

Dr Wheeler's membership of the Academy is expected to strengthen the University of Leeds' links with practitioners in Spain, further consolidating its reputation and standing as an international reference point for the study of Hispanic theatres.
