German Year Abroad in Munich

German Year Abroad in Munich

German at Leeds student, Carla Potter, talks about her year abroad on a work placement in Munich.

On my year abroad I worked as a recruitment intern in Munich and I fell completely in love with the city - easily done with the gorgeous buildings, parks and lakes. I really enjoyed my placement at Brainlab, as I had great colleagues and really felt part of the team. My main tasks were the recruitment of all student positions, organization of student events and the coordination of interviews for permanent staff. This gave me the opportunity to speak to and meet lots of different people and really improved my communication and interpersonal skills, which will undoubtedly help me in the future. Doing a work placement meant that I had plenty of chance to practise my spoken German, and I am really happy with the progress I have made.  On my year abroad there were many times when I had to push myself out of my comfort zone, which has increased my self-confidence and has made me feel more prepared for challenges I might face in the future. It was amazing to have the opportunity to experience a different culture and I have learnt so much about German history, culture and traditions - I can't wait to go back!
