Senior UN interpreter joins Leeds Interpreting Teaching Team

We are thrilled to announce that Dr. John Li, a distinguished Senior UN interpreter, has joined the Leeds interpreting teaching team.

We are thrilled to announce that Dr. John Li, a distinguished Senior UN interpreter, has joined the Leeds interpreting teaching team. 

Dr. Li brings a wealth of experience and expertise to our programmes, having recently retired from the conference interpreting booth of the United Nations Office in Geneva (UNOG). Dr. Li’s illustrious career at UNOG spanned 16 years, during which he covered a wide range of meetings and conferences. His work included highly sensitive political discussions and technically challenging sessions, both at the UNOG base and on various missions. Additionally, Dr. Li has served at other UN duty stations, contributing his skills to the Interpretation Services in Vienna, Geneva, Rome, and Paris. Since 1995, he has been a UN/EU accredited conference interpreter and translator, regularly working at UN stations and for conferences organised by these bodies in London.

Dr Li is teaching simultaneous interpreting in the Leeds programmes of MA Conference Interpreting (MACITS) and MA Business & Public Service Interpreting (MABPSITS). Both programmes require students to study and pass six interpreting modules, which cover both consecutive and simultaneous interpreting and interpreting in both directions or in two languages, in addition to practical translation modules and modules in translation studies.

The Leeds interpreting programmes are internationally recognised for their high-level professional interpreter training. Our teaching team comprises in-house interpreter trainers with extensive professional and training experience, as well as external professional interpreters accredited by the AIIC, UN, and EU. Dr. Li's contribution to our team will further enrich the educational experience of our students, providing them with unparalleled insights and knowledge from his distinguished career.
