Working as a Linguist at the European Central Bank (ECB)

Career talk and Editing Workshop on Linguistic work in the European Central Bank

Join Rebecca Young (Senior Translator/Editor) and Adam Dewhirst (Trainee Translator/Editor, University of Leeds, Centre for Translation Studies MA Applied Translation Studies, 2016-17), linguists at the European Central Bank (ECB) in Frankfurt, to find out about the ECB, its English Translation and Editing (ETE) Section and the translation and editing traineeships in 2019.

13:00-14:00 After a short introduction to the ECB and its tasks, Rebecca and Adam will describe the role played by the English Translation and Editing Section as part of the Language Services Division within the Directorate General Communications and the day-to-day work performed by ETE’s translators/editors, focusing particularly on:

· the broad linguistic skillset, which requires the team to translate into English from one or more languages, revise and provide quality control on outsourced documents, peer review documents translated and edited in-house, edit and proofread materials produced by speakers of languages other than English, and draft/adapt materials for the website;

· the specialised and often technical nature of the subject matter;

· the high media sensitivity and visibility of some aspects of the work.

They will then provide details on the traineeships in 2019, describing what is involved, what is on offer and what to expect from the recruitment process.

14:00-15:00 The presentation will be followed by a short editing workshop to provide a “taster” of this kind of work, as this is an area in which ETE is particularly specialised and a skill that is now much in demand in other international institutions.

CTS Professionalisation Talks

The Centre for Translation Studies (CTS) is organising a series of talks by professionals working in the Language Services Industry to complement its taught MA programmes. These sessions will introduce additional practical advice, including careers guidance.

The talks will be given by enterprising alumni and professional translation project managers, in-house and freelance translators, subtitlers, and interpreters, representatives of international organisations such as the EU, as well as representatives of professional organisations and companies operating in the Language Services Industry.

The talks are open to all CTS MA students, as well as UG language students and interested members of the Professional Associations which collaborate with the Centre for Translation Studies.
