Have you ever thought about who writes museum labels? Do they tell you what you want to know? This workshop will help you answer these questions.
How much have you thought about museum labels? Do they tell you what you want to know? How many different ways are there to interpret the same object? This open workshop (with free admission and free lunch) invites you to help answer these questions and to record you own responses to a group of museum objects selected by lecturers from three local universities.
This University and Museums network project is funded by Huddersfield University. The project is led by Stella Baraklianou (Senior Lecturer Photography, University of Huddersfield), Amanda Tinker (Senior Lecturer / Academic Skills tutor, University of Huddersfield), Ruth Robbins (Professor of English Literature, Leeds Beckett University) and Olivia Santovetti (Associate Professor of Italian, School of Languages, Cultures and Societies, University of Leeds) working with Kitty Ross (Curator of Leeds History, Leeds Museums and Galleries).
The objects are mostly domestic objects that would have been familiar to 19th century women but whose significance may have been lost to modern audiences. The aim is to tease out stories (real and imagined) and add new layers of interpretation using methods such as classification, photography and flash fiction.
The aim is to enhance and update the visitors’ engagement with objects and displays and the results will help inform the online museum catalogue and future museum labels. The event will also be photographed and recorded for use in a future academic publication.
Participants must be aged 16 or over.
To book, please contact email@example.com or telephone 0113 3784079.
