The “Year Abroad Conference 2019: Thinking Global”

The School of Languages, Cultures and Societies and the Leeds Institute for Teaching Excellence host the conference on language-based Year Abroad.

In the era of Brexit, the benefits for students going on a language-based Year Abroad to boost language and cultural skills, resilience and employability in a globalising world, is more valuable than ever . However, ensuring Year Abroad success creates challenges for students and staff particularly in the current climate of uncertainty over the future of modern language degrees, access to Erasmus, and global slowdown.

This conference provides a platform for academic and professional staff to come together to share their expertise, experience and practice in all aspects of the Year Abroad. The day will include talks and workshops providing both practical and research-focused activities. Invited speakers, including Professor Ros Mitchell (University of Southampton), will offer specialist insights into student experiences during Year Abroad, and how to boost employability opportunities longer-term, preparing students for new horizons in Europe and beyond.
