Charlotte Eichler

Profile

I was born in Hertfordshire, UK, and studied for a BA in English Literature and Russian at the University of Nottingham. After completing an MA in Norse and Viking Studies, also at the University of Nottingham, I came to the School of History to work for the International Medieval Bibliography.

I am also a poet. My first collection, Swimming Between Islands, was published by Carcanet Press in 2023 and was shortlisted for the Seamus Heaney First Collection Poetry Prize in 2024.

Responsibilities

  • Assistant Editor of the International Medieval Bibliography (IMB)

Research interests

My twin interests in Medieval Studies and contemporary poetry have combined with my involvement in Ragna’s Islands, an AHRC-funded research project initiated by The Centre for the Study of the Viking Age at the University of Nottingham. The project is built around Professor Judith Jesch’s new translation of The Saga of the Earls of Orkney (Orkneyinga Saga). It will bring together evidence of archaeology and place-names to transform our understanding of the Viking and Norse periods in northern Scotland. I have been engaged to stimulate saga- and island-based creativity, and will be doing a writing residency in North Ronaldsay and Fair Isle in September 2024.

Qualifications

  • MA Norse and Viking Studies (University of Nottingham)
