Three Minute Thesis Winner

James Titterton, third-year IMS PG Researcher, won the Three Minute Thesis competition, part of the 2017 Leeds Doctoral College Showcase.

The 2017 Leeds Doctoral College Showcase, part of the 8th annual University of Leeds Postgraduate Conference, was held on 4 December 2017. The Showcase is designed as an annual celebration of postgraduate research and offers awards for multiple kinds of research and research skills, including the Three Minute Thesis and Research Image of the Year. The Three Minute Thesis competition involves presenting a summary of a thesis to a non-specialist audience in under three minutes while using a single power point slide.

Titterton's presentation, titled 'Trickery and Deceit in Medieval Warfare', addressed the question: How did contemporary historians use stories of deception in their narratives to praise their heroes and condemn their enemies? By answering this question and others, perceptions about the medieval way of war can be challenged, and the complexity of a soldier's need to balance military necessity with the demands of their social, spiritual and personal values may be recognised. A video of Titterton's presentation will be submitted for consideration in the national Three Minute Thesis competition by the judges.
