Humans in the Loop (2024) – film screening

Join us for a screening of Humans in the Loop (2024, dir. Aranya Sahay, fiction film), hosted by the The Critical AI Studies Research Group.

Set in Jharkhand, India, the film follows Nehma, an Oraon tribal woman who takes a job at a data labelling centre — training AI for an American tech firm — in order to secure custody of her children.

Weaving together the lush landscapes of rural life and the demanding worlds of algorithmic labour, the film asks how AI learns, whose knowledge shapes it, and whose voices are erased in the process.

The screening will be followed by a discussion exploring shared interests in AI ethics, labour, indigeneity, data politics and the cultural dimensions of machine learning.

A trailer of the film is available to view here.
