The UK General Election 2024: Reflecting on the quality of democratic debate

Join researchers from the School for short presentations about their contributions to the 2024 Election Analysis Report and further reflections. Tea/coffee to follow event

The Journalism Research Group (JRG) and the Political Communication Research Group (PCRG) will jointly host a research seminar entitled ‘The UK General Election 2024: Reflecting on the quality of democratic debate’.  Drawing on the Election analysis report co-edited by Katy Parry and Julie Firmstone with colleagues at Bournemouth and Liverpool Universities, we will hear from contributors from the School of Media and Communication:

Dr Lone Sorensen: Why Nigel Farage’s anti-media election interference claims are so dangerous 

Professor Katy Parry: Tetchiness meets disenchantment: capturing the contrasting political energies of the campaign (co-author: Prof. Beth Johnson) 

Mr Carl Hartley: Is this the first podcast election? (co-author: Professor Stephen Coleman) 

The report features 101 contributions from over 130 leading academics and emerging scholars. Published 10 days after the election, the free publication captures the immediate thoughts, reflections and early research insights on the 2024 UK General Election from the cutting edge of media and politics research. It includes short articles by a number of staff in the School: Stephen Coleman, John Corner, Carl Hartley, Beth Johnson, Katy Parry, Simon Popple, and Lone Sorensen. The report is available as a free downloadable PDF, as a website, and we will have a limited number of the printed copies with us for those attending who would like to keep a copy. The event will be followed by refreshments from 5pm.
