Dr Danielle Bromwich

Profile

I’m a Teaching and Scholarship Lecturer at the University of Leeds. Before that I was an Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Massachusetts Boston (UMB), where I taught from 2010–2022. During my time at UMB, I was the Assistant Director of Philosophy in an Inclusive Key Summer Institute (PIKSI) Boston for two years. PIKSI Boston is an annual week-long summer institute for undergraduates from under-represented groups in philosophy. Before arriving in Boston, I was a Post-doctoral Fellow in the Department of Clinical Bioethics at the U.S. National Institutes of Health. I received my PhD in Philosophy from the University of Toronto, and a MA and BA in philosophy from the University of Sheffield.

Research interests

My current research is in applied ethics, broadly construed. I am writing a monograph—The Ethics of Consent (Routledge)­—with my co-author Joseph Millum (St. Andrews), working on a series of papers on mental competence, and starting a project on the ethics of conversation. My future pedogogical research will draw on these philosophical interests. I am interested in exploring: (i) how to teach ethics as a skill to physician associates and medical students; (ii) the pedogogical value of philosophy as conversation; and (iii) the role autonomous learning plays in building students’ academic self concept.

Student education

I lead ethics curriculum design and teaching for Physician Associate Studies (MSc) and I co-lead these activities for Medicine and Surgery (MBChB). I also teach bioethics and philosophical research skills in the School of Philosophy, Religion, and History of Science. A portion of my role is Curriculum Redefined work.
