Success in 2026 QS World University Rankings by Subject
The School of English has been ranked 29th in the world for English in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026
In the 2026 QS World University Rankings by Subject the School of English has risen seven places from last year and now comes in at number 29 in the world for English. This is a great result, and the first time in recent years that the School has placed inside the top thirty in this ranking. QS is an important international league table, regularly used by governments, recruitment agents and students to make decisions about where to study.
As the Head of School, Professor Hazel Hutchison, commented:
“We have so much exciting activity here across our teaching and research, showing how language and literature have an impact on real-world issues and challenges, including health, identity, digital technologies and the environment. It’s great to see our School recognised as one of the top thirty places in the world to study in our subject area.”
The School of English scored the highest in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures, which has maintained its place in the top 100 in the QS rankings.
Professor Andrew Thorpe, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures offered the following response:
“We are delighted to see that the University of Leeds has maintained its place among the world’s leading institutions for the Arts and Humanities in the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject. This recognition reflects the hard work, creativity and collaborative spirit of our colleagues in the Schools right across the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures. Their teaching and research continue to make a huge impact locally, nationally and globally.
I would also like to congratulate our colleagues in the School of English on their particularly strong performance this year. Their rise in the rankings is a testament to the outstanding quality of their scholarship, teaching and engagement, and to the sustained commitment of staff across the School.”
