What made you want to study your course at the University?
I decided to undertake an Art Foundation Course to develop my creative practice in a range of disciplines, including: 3D, textiles, photography and graphic design. Through this broad experimentation I was able to recognise my specialist area, Textile Design, and to later create a portfolio in preparation for University.
In addition to design, an interest in English Literature and Language meant that I was seeking a course that would not only push my creative boundaries, but lead me to excel in other academic areas. I understood that the course at the University of Leeds would allow me to partake in not only creative modules, but also ‘Discovery Modules’ that I could select from different courses throughout the University. I felt that continuing to progress my writing skills would complement my artistic studies, broaden my field of practice and result in being a more flexible candidate for jobs in the future.
Describe the aspects of the course that you have enjoyed the most.
The breadth and flexibility of the course has been something that I have particularly enjoyed. It has also been exciting to make use of the range of facilities throughout the school; some of which have become fundamental to my current Textile practice. I was able to use a combination of laser cutting/engraving, print techniques and unconventional materials (such as resin casting) in my Textile pieces.
What are you planning to do once you graduate?
I would like to continue with my creative practice; using unconventional materials to integrate Textile pieces with Product Design. I am particularly interested in creating installations for interior purposes, such as hotels or restaurants.
