Research interests

I have a strong research interest in information design and healthcare. I have published a range of papers related to pain pictograms, pain diagrams and pain apps and have regularly collaborated with NHS staff and healthcare academics. Together with Public Health England I have written and published guidelines for the design of infographics in the public health domain, examining how the public and public health professionals use and perceive infographics. This work was funded through the AHRC as a Design Fellowship Award. I am also author of the website http://www.visualisinghealth.com

Currently I am the Principal Investigator on a 2 year AHRC funded (250k) project to improve standards of hand hygiene in Schools, working with the Glasgow School of Art, colleagues at the University of Leeds, school partners, Eureka! museum and school children themselves.

I am a regular reviewer for academic journals including Design Studies and Health Communication and conferences such as the International Information Visualisation Conference. I have also been a member of the Advisory panel for the AHRC project 'Seeing Data', a project related to evaluating the effectiveness of big data visualisations. I am a member of the AHRC Peer Review College.
