Profile
I obtained my PhD in Textile Technology from The University of Leeds in 2001, and obtained BSc and MSc degrees in Textile Technology from the Northwest Institute of Textile Science and Technology (NWITST), China in 1985 and 1988 respectively.
After a few years of working experience in NWITST and Heriot-Watt University, I joined the School in 2003 as a Research Fellow working in nonwovens and technical textiles. I was appointed as a Lecturer in Performance Textiles in 2008, promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2010 and Personal Chair in Fibre and Textile Technology in 2019.
Responsibilities
- Director of Research and Innovation
Research interests
My research interests are focused on functional fabrics and clothing, including creating functional fibres for technical textiles and protective clothing. I am particularly interested in the engineering design of fibrous assemblies for technical applications, including characterisation and modelling of liquid wetting and wicking, fluid-fibre-particle interactions, as well as fluid transport and heat transfer in fibrous materials.
I am also interested in characterisation, digitisation and digitalisation of fabric tactile and drape properties. Other interests include the engineering of sustainable technical textile materials and their life cycle assessment.
