Conference: 'Rupture, Repression, Repetition?' The Algerian War of Independence in the Present

Two-day conference organised by PhD Student Beatrice Ivey and Leverhulme Postdoctoral Fellow Dr Daniel Hartley, 07-08 September.

Registration is open for a two-day conference at the University of Leeds on the legacy of the Algerian War of Independence (1954-62) as a figure of the 'present' in History and Philosophy. The conference will welcome speakers from across the UK, France, Algeria, Ireland, and North America and feature keynote speeches from Professor Jane Hiddleston (Exeter College, University of Oxford) and Dr Natalya Vince (University of Portsmouth). Selected contributions from the conference will be published in a 2018 special issue of the International Journal of Francophone Studies. The aim of this issue is to investigate the legacy of the Algerian War of Independence in the present whilst considering how the War and its subsequent memorialisations force us to reconceptualise historical temporality itself (the ‘legacy’ being but one mode of historical temporality)?
