Unique opportunity for art teachers to apply to Plan Prepare Provide residential
Applications are open for this year’s Plan Prepare Provide – a programme offering a unique opportunity for teachers and their schools to improve their delivery of academic and practical art lessons.
Now in its eighth year, Plan Prepare Provide begins with a free three-day residential course which takes place this year from 8 to 10 July at the University of Leeds.
The Art Teachers Residential provides critical advice, insight and experience from current art and art history teachers, academics and arts professionals. Participating in the residential enables teachers to:
- engage with pro-active ways to develop their teaching and artistic practice
- build networks, and share ideas and experiences with peers
- improve delivery and results on the written element of the Art A Level
- develop new ideas for planning
- integrate ideas from art by past and contemporary artists into art lessons with confidence

Plan Prepare Provide is an initiative run by the School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies and Arts and Humanities Outreach Team at the University of Leeds.
The Art Teachers Residential has been generously funded by The Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art over the past three years, with a commitment to continue this support until at least 2026.
Attending the residential is the first fundamental step in becoming part of the Plan Prepare Provide network. After the residential finishes, participants are invited to become part of an ever-growing network of art teachers.
This includes access to online continuing professional development (CPD) events across the academic year and the opportunity to apply for a follow-on Postgraduate Certificate in Developing Teacher’s Research and Practice.

Abigail Harrison Moore, Professor of Art History and Museum Studies in the School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies, said:
“I am delighted to be launching the 2024 iteration of Plan Prepare Provide.
“I’ve just been watching the films that we made at the residential last year and they reminded me, if I needed a reminder, of how vital this programme is.
“Our teachers arrive exhausted after a long year of teaching and copious administration and leave inspired, ready to face the new school year with a bulging bag of ideas, resources and new like-minded friends.
“As our network grows each year, we continue to support the teachers with regular CPD, and we also get to see how the Plan Prepare Provide teachers continue to joyfully support each other.”
Plan Prepare Provide feedback
The best subject-specific continuing professional development in 22 years of teaching art.
Feedback from art teachers who took part in last year’s residential was overwhelmingly positive, describing the three days of activity as ‘inspiring’, ‘amazing’ and ‘incredible’.
Described by one teacher as “the best subject-specific continuing professional development in 22 years of teaching art”, there was an overwhelming view that the residential made the teachers feel valued and it encouraged them to continue their work to inspire their students to consider a creative future.
