Speaker:
Kalwant Bhopal is Professor of Education and Social Justice in the School of Education, University of Birmingham.
Summary:
The lecture examines recent statistics on the representation of BME (Black and Minority Ethnic) staff and students in higher education and explorse how processes of racism, exclusion and marginalisation continue to disadvantage BME groups.
It uses empirical research which explores BME academic flight from higher education to suggest ways forward for the inclusion of BME focusing on issues of equity and social justice. The lecture also raises how white privilege works to disadvantage those from BME backgrounds and explores how universities can develop good practice for the inclusion of BME groups in higher education.
