Dr Alexia Moncrieff recieves Bryan Gandevia award
A prize for Australian military–medical history has been awarded to Dr Moncrieff for her PhD thesis.
The Australian War Memorial has announced Dr Alexia Moncrieff (School of History) as the winner of the prestigious Bryan Gandevia Prize for Australian Military-Medical History.
The award is in recognition for Dr Moncrieff's PhD thesis 'We are entitled to some control': the Australian Army Medical Corps in the First World War.
A prize of $5,000 AUD is awarded to an outstanding honours, masters or doctoral thesis on a significant subject on military, social, or medical aspects of Australian wartime history. Throughout the examination process, examiners praised Dr Moncrieff's research, commenting:
One of the unusual and impressive things about this thesis is its close examination – and quantification – of data concerning both casualty evacuation and treatment. This kind of attention to detail is rare … One gets a very clear sense of the challenges facing the Australian medical corps and how the AAMC attempted to overcome them.
The Bryan Gandevia Prize will next be awarded in 2020.
