PhD researcher receives coverage from BBC for academic article

The BBC recently covered PhD researcher Lloyd Belton’s academic article ‘‘A deep interest in your cause’: the inter-American sphere of black abolitionism and civil rights’.

Within his article, Lloyd writes about Emiliano Mundrucu, an activist from Brazil who fought US segregation. He studied Mundrucu’s life for his master’s degree at Columbia University in New York and is currently continuing his research at Leeds.

‘A deep interest in your cause’: the inter-American sphere of black abolitionism and civil rights argues that black men and women activists from the Caribbean and South America made key contributions to the US abolitionist, civil rights and women’s rights campaigns in the mid-nineteenth century.

The article examines three case studies of Boston and New York-based activists from Brazil, Haiti and Jamaica.

Lloyd was interviewed by the BBC as part of their coverage, detailing more information about Emiliano Mundrucu.
