Dr Denis Flannery talks 'Bowie, Reading, Writing' on BBC Radio 6 Music

This Sunday, don't miss Dr Denis Flannery talking about his highly popular module exploring the work of David Bowie on BBC Radio 6 Music.

'Bowie, Reading, Writing', which Dr Flannery has been running since October 2016, examines the place of literature and 'the literary' in Bowie's varied and extensive body of creative work. It is based in the School of English, but available to students across the University as a discovery module

The module explores Bowie's use of the song as a literary and theatrical form, and the interaction between his songwriting and other forms of writing such as modernist fiction, poetry, philosophy, and psychoanalysis.

Students on the module also read Lazarus - Bowie's acclaimed musical co-written with Enda Walsh and inspired in part by Bowie's work on the 1976 film The Man Who Fell to Earth. Dr Flannery has previously considered the significance of Bowie's venture into this genre in an article for The Conversation.

This Sunday, Dr Flannery will be discussing the module and his wider work as Senior Lecture in American Literature with Mary Anne Hobbs on BBC Radio 6 Music. You can catch the broadcast live at 07:00 or listen to it online shortly afterwards.
