Dr Hazel Price

Profile

I joined the University of Leeds in September 2026, and teach across the UG programmes. I have previously held lectureships at the University of Salford and the University of Huddersfield.

I studied for my PhD at the University of Huddersfield (awarded 2019).

Research interests

My research interests include corpus linguistics, (critical) discourse analysis and pragmatics. My research uses methods from corpus linguistics and critical discourse analysis to explore health communication, particularly in relation to mental illness. My recent research has focussed on how the UK press represent issues concerning mental illness and how this can be said to affect society’s view of mental illness. My research also explores how the words we use to talk about mental health and illness have changed over time. My research in this area is reported in my 2022 monograph, The Language of Mental Illness: Corpus Linguistics and the Construction of Mental Illness in the Press (published by Cambridge University Press). This book was nominated for the prestigious British Association for Applied Linguistics (BAAL) Book Prize 2022. Since the publication of my 2022 monograph, I have published work on the language of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) (Price, 2023), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) (Vilar Lluch & Price, 2026), and Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) (Price, 2027).

I am also interested in the application of research in linguistics, particularly through public engagement initiatives and public linguistics. In 2018, I edited a book related to this topic with Dan McIntyre for Routledge entitled Applying Linguistics: Language and the Impact Agenda. In 2022, I co-authored The Babel Lexicon of Language, an entertaining and accessible introduction to the key terminology involved in the study of language (published by Cambridge University Press). A further co-edited book Communicating Linguistics: Language, Community and Public Engagement was published in 2023. In 2024, I was part of a team who worked in collaboration with the Editor of Debates at the House of Lords to to identify and resolve issues in producing subtitles of parliamentary debates for d/Deaf, deafened, and hard-of-hearing viewers/audience members (McIntyre et al., 2024).

I am an Editorial Assistant for the popular language magazine, Babel, where I write the regular feature ‘Language in the News’. I am also Book Reviews Editor for Language and Literature (SAGE).
