Dr Eric Prenowitz

Profile

After a year in Jerry Lettvin's lab at MIT, I studied physics as an undergraduate at Harvard. I then worked for several years on commercial fishing boats, from New Bedford to Kodiak, before undertaking graduate studies in Paris. I completed a Diplôme d’Etudes Approfondies in the philosophy of science at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, and I obtained my PhD under the supervision of Hélène Cixous from the Centre d’Etudes Féminines at the University of Paris 8. I have translated and written about work by Cixous and Jacques Derrida. I have also done translations for the Théâtre du Soleil and contributed to a number of projects involved in cultural heritage/memory in post-war Cambodia. I am the Executive Editor of parallax, a journal of critical theory and cultural studies.

Responsibilities

 • Taught Postgraduate Tutor

Research interests

Cultural and critical theory, gender, sexual difference and feminism, deconstruction, psychoanalysis, creative and critical writing, ‘French’ thought/letters (Cixous, Derrida), poststructuralism and its long prehistory, postcolonial theories and practices, semiotic and literary theory, the tasks of translation, animals, mnemo-tele-technological supplements. Radical performativities: writing, broadly speaking, that won’t keep still, and the unstable borders between thinking and its others (art, literature, theatre, life...).

Research projects

Some research projects I'm currently working on, or have worked on, will be listed below. Our list of all research projects allows you to view and search the full list of projects in the faculty.

Student education

I teach on semiology, feminism/sexual difference/gender, deconstruction, psychoanalysis, critical theory, and generally the becoming-literature (or art) of thinking. Stressing close analysis pretty much at every turn.
