The next meeting of the Eighteenth-Century Studies Seminar:
Informal war or real war rather than peace was the normal condition of Anglo-Spanish relations during the long 18 century. This international conflict gave impetus to a ‘spirit of ambitious emulation’ of one state’s institutions and policies by another. In this talk, Dr Villamediana González will explore the place of England in the intellectual landscape of eighteenth-century Spain, somewhat obscured by the pervasive assumption that foreign influence was confined to French incursions. In so doing, it will unravel how Spain, particularly the Spanish press, adopted the economic, cultural and aesthetic products of Britain, contributing in this way to Spain’s programme of Enlightenment reform.
