PRiA Event - Academic Development Session with Professor Suresh Canagarajah (Pennsylvania State University)

Location: William Bragg SR (GR.18) | University of Leeds | Coffee, tea and biscuits provided

We are delighted to welcome Professor Suresh Canagarajah for an informal academic development session following his symposium plenary.

This will be a reading-based group discussion focusing on decolonial approaches to academic communication, multilingual pedagogies, and the politics of scholarly publishing. The session is intended to offer a reflective space for colleagues, PGRs and PGTs to connect these ideas with their own research and teaching.

Main reading

  • Canagarajah, S. 2024. ‘Decolonizing academic writing pedagogies for multilingual students’, TESOL Quarterly, 58(1), pp. 280–306.

Supplementary reading (optional)

  • Canagarajah, S. 2022. ‘Language diversity in academic writing: toward decolonizing scholarly publishing’, Journal of Multicultural Discourses, 17(2), pp. 107–128.

An additional article with empirical data may also be circulated for those who wish to explore further dimensions of translingual practice.

The session will centre on shared critical discussion, rather than a formal talk, and will provide opportunities for participants to explore questions such as:

  • What does ‘decolonising academic writing’ mean in practical terms?
  • How can multilingual repertoires serve as resources rather than ‘problems’?
  • What barriers and inequalities persist in scholarly publishing and how might we address them?

All welcome. No advance preparation required beyond reading the main article.
