Dr Nick Makins

Profile

I joined Leeds in September 2023 to take up a British Academy Postdoctoral Research Fellowship, researching how normative principles guide action under uncertainty. Prior to this, I was the Sowerby Lecturer in Philosophy at King’s College London, as part of the Philosophy & Medicine Project. I received my PhD from the Department of Philosophy, Logic and Scientific Method at LSE in 2022.

Research interests

Most of my research is related in some way or other to the reasoning that underlies decisions made under uncertainty, and draws on ideas from metaethics, decision theory, and philosophy of science. The research project for my BA Postdoctoral Fellowship, entitled “Normative Principles and Uncertainty: A User’s Guide”, is an attempt to understand the claim that normative principles ought to be suitably action-guiding, with a particular focus on contexts in which individuals are uncertain about the relevant principles. I also have ongoing work on risk-sensitivity in medical decision making.
