Philosophy Seminar: Carrie Jenkins (UBC)

Carrie Jenkins (UBC) 'Is Feeling First? Distinguishing Phenomenal and Agential Love'

This talk is an exploratory presentation of some new material I’m working on for a second book (in a projected love trilogy). I am interested in distinguishing (1) ways of thinking about love that prioritize feelings and emotions, and (2) ways that prioritize action, behaviour, and agency. My aim is not to declare one approach better or worse, but to suggest that there is value in understanding both and exploring the relationships between them. Along the way, I aim to raise a few questions about love and happiness, especially the ideology of the romantic “happy ever after”. This project, like What Love Is, looks both within and beyond the academic discipline of philosophy for inspirations and audiences.
