Simon Evnine on "The Anonymity of a Murmur: Internet (and Other) Memes"

Abstract: Internet memes are an increasingly important part of people’s on-line lives. But what is a meme? I will argue that, roughly speaking, a meme is a set of norms for the production of certain items (typically, though not only, images with text) that develop through distinctive kinds of social practices. I extend and develop this rough answer and illustrate it with discussion of some well-known memes, including Batman Slapping Robin, Archaic Rap, and Socially Awkward Penguin.
