Tom Wardell

Profile

I am a first year PhD researcher at the University of Leeds, studying part time and through distance learning.

My research explores human-chatbot interactions and relationships, addressing metaphysical and ethical questions that arise. I am seeking to make sense of what people mean when they claim to enter into a relationship with a chatbot and whether this can involve romantic love. By doing this, I hope to provide some normative grounding to help create a framework on how we can best navigate these types of claims and relationships.

My interest in the role of technologies in love and relationships began as part of my MA where I explored the role of ‘love drugs’ in enhancing and fostering love. This led to further research into the philosophy of love and relationships more broadly.

I also have research interests in the philosophy of religion and other areas of normative and applied ethics.

Outside of my academic studies, I hold Qualified Teacher Status and the position of Assistant Headteacher at a secondary school in Lincolnshire. As part of my senior leadership role, I also teach Religious Studies and Sociology to students aged 11-18. Additionally, I have studied an additional National Project Qualification in Middle Leadership.
