A Feature or a Bug: Evaluating Digital Literacy in Postgraduate Museum Studies Programmes

In this series of events, the Centre for Critical Studies in Museums, Galleries and Heritage presents research going on across the University of Leeds.

This week’s speakers are Dr Maria Paula Arias (Lecturer, School of Digital Arts, Manchester Metropolitan University) and Dr Sarah Feinstein (Teaching Fellow, School of Performance and Cultural Industries, University of Leeds).

The COVID-19 pandemic is currently highlighting the importance of digital literacy for the survival and relevance of galleries, libraries, archives and museums (GLAMs). These institutions, in turn, have demonstrated a growing tendency to prefer entry-level staff members to hold post-secondary degrees.

As museums and galleries continue to demand digital literacy and skills within their practices, we question whether the current curriculum we offer is meeting these demands. Our ongoing research explores the pedagogic responsibilities and contradictions that these university courses have to their students and the GLAM sector.

This seminar will share some of our early findings with you and discuss with you how digital literacy might act as intervention in disrupting established hierarchies and inequalities in the cultural sector.
