Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures students and alumna recognised at the Sport Scholarships Awards Ceremony

The University's Sport Scholarships are designed to enable student-athletes to achieve excellence both on the field and in academia

The Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures (AHC) took centre stage at the University of Leeds’ Sport Scholarships Awards Ceremony this week, celebrating the exceptional achievements of its students and alumni who excel in both academic and athletic pursuits.

The ceremony highlighted the accomplishments of two individuals connected to the Faculty. Claire Cashmore MBE, a Paralympic champion and AHC alumna (Linguistics and Phonetics, 2011; Hon LLD, 2013), was inducted into the University’s Sporting Hall of Fame. Although Claire was unable to attend in person, the honour was accepted on her behalf by her close friend Rebecca Grace, a fellow University of Leeds alumna whose speech celebrated Claire’s journey and contributions to sport.

Additionally, current AHC Sport Scholarship holder Max Burgin, a History student, shared his experiences of competing at the 800m final during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Max’s speech provided an insight into the dedication required to balance elite-level sport with academic studies.

The Sport Scholarships Awards Ceremony was a brilliant opportunity to celebrate the remarkable sporting achievements of our students and alumni. The induction of Claire Cashmore into the Sporting Hall of Fame and Max Burgin’s inspiring account of his Olympic journey highlight the outstanding talent within our Faculty and we are incredibly proud to support our sport scholars and others as they excel in their sporting and academic endeavours.
