A presentation by Michael Harper, Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) and The Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
What sparked the awareness of a burgeoning African-diaspora Renaissance? What made the Euro-centric nations wake up to artistic movements that already existed but rarely got any attention? Certainly, the death of George Floyd was one of the sparks that ignited the “canon”, but it was only one -things were already in train.
In the past few years, there has been a push for change and inclusion led by government initiatives, organisations, and individuals. “Exploding the Canon” will explore the work that is being done to diversify and be more inclusive. Specific attention will be given to art song and opera.
