Upcoming lecture

Dr Francesca Petrizzo (Leverhulme Study Abroad Scholar, Universita di Roma 2 Tor Vergata, Roma) will present 'Normans Don't Cry: Grief, Anger, and the Hautevilles'. Petrizzo is a recent alumna of the University of Leeds and completed her PhD here in 2018, which focused on the family dynamics of the Norman Hautevilles between Southern Italy and Syria.

In two generations, the Norman Hautevilles rose from landlessness to the rule of the kingdom of Sicily and the Principality of Antioch in the crusader East. This lecture investigates the undercurrent of emotion which knit together and sometimes tore apart the members of their extraordinarily successful and numerous family. Grief, anger, and the love and hatred they implied left their mark in chronicles, documentary evidence, and artistic artefacts. By examining the bonds of siblings, parents and children, and husbands and wives, Petrizzo will build a complex picture of mutual feeling and gendered performance among the rulers of the 11th and 12th century Norman Mediterranean.

The next lecture will take place on 27 March 2019, and will be delivered by Dr Helen Birkett (University of Exeter).

All are welcome!
