The IMS is co-hosting the Selig Brodetsky Memorial Lecture 2021. 'Far From Jerusalem: The Exclusion of Jews on Christian Maps', Professor Asa S. Mittman (California State University-Chico)
Professor Asa S. Mittman (Art History, California State University-Chico) is an authority on medieval monsters. This lecture is about how medieval Christian maps use principles of inclusion and exclusion to generate fictions of collective identity. This talk will examine cartographical images of Jews, thus far understudied but key to the creation of a central myth of the Middle Ages: Christendom. The event is organised by the University of Leeds Centre for Jewish Studies, Institute for Medieval Studies, and School of Philosophy, Religion and History of Science.
