Book launch for the International Society for First World War Studies

A book launch for the International Society for First World War Studies’ 11th Annual Conference at Blackwell's Bookshop, 21 Woodhouse Lane

You are cordially invited to the launch of two books:

Women as Veterans in Britain and France” by Professor Alison Fell (School of Languages, Cultures and Societies), published by Cambridge University Press; and “An Equal Burden: The Men of the Royal Army Medical Corps in the First World War” by Dr Jessica Meyer (School of History), published by Oxford University Press.

Women as Veterans in Britain and France” is the story of how women in France and Britain between 1915 and 1933 appropriated the cultural identity of female war veteran in order to have greater access to public life and a voice in a political climate in which women were rarely heard on the public stage. The 'veterans' covered by this history include former nurses, charity workers, secret service agents and members of resistance networks in occupied territory, as well as members of the British auxiliary corps.

An Equal Burden: The Men of the Royal Army Medical Corps in the First World War draws on a wide range of source material, including some previously unexamined archival sources, and is the first scholarly history of the Other Ranks of the Royal Army Medical Corps in the First World War. Offering a new take on the cultural history of World War One and medicine, the book explores the gender history of the medical services, focussing on masculinity.

The event will take place at Blackwell’s Bookshop, 21 Woodhouse Lane on Wednesday 11th September 2019, 18:00 – 20:00.

Drinks and light refreshments will be served.
