- Thesis title: Pre-heraldic iconography and the change to true heraldry amongst the aristocracy of northern France and England, 1100-1300.
- Supervisors: Professor Alan V. Murray, Professor Emeritus Catherine E. Karkov
Profile
I earned my living in education, finishing as a Deputy Head, and then the law, becoming a local government solicitor. I retired in 2006.
Research interests
Since retiring, I have concentrated on medieval social history, especially the twelfth to fourteenth centuries, sigillography, and my life-long interest in heraldry (I was given A.R. Wagner’s Heraldry in England for my ninth birthday). As a result, I have become concerned by how often medieval historians, especially of chivalry, have been misled by the mistakes made by heraldic specialists in their histories of medieval heraldry.
