Dominic Bilton to speak at the Queer Heritage and Collections Network Symposium 2023
Postgraduate Researcher Dominic Bilton will be speaking about the exhibition (Un)Defining Queer at this year’s Queer Heritage and Collections Network Symposium.
The Queer Heritage and Collections Network is a UK-wide Subject Specialist Network that provides training, networking and peer support to people working with LGBTQ+ collections and histories. It supports galleries, libraries, archives and museums that are developing public programming bringing LGBTQ+ histories and themes to the fore.
Taking place on 20 and 21 March, this year’s Queer Heritage and Collections Network annual symposium aims to explore the innovative and meaningful queer programming being developed by museums and heritage organisations across the UK.
Open to museum/heritage sector professionals and academics at all career levels, the symposium will be running as a hybrid event – people can book to attend in person at Queer Britain in London or online.
The symposium programme includes a range of talks, showcases and workshops. Dominic Bilton will be taking part in a Fundee Showcase on 20 March.
Dominic is a practice-led Project Producer currently working at the Whitworth, Manchester. He is currently in the second year of a PhD at the University of Leeds, based within the School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies. Dominic’s research project – in close collaboration with the Whitworth – investigates what it might mean to queer a museum.
Dominic said:
“My talk will focus on how a financial award given to the Whitworth by the Queer Heritage and Collections Network will help the gallery continue its queer constituent work.
“It will also be an opportunity to talk about the development of our co-led exhibition (Un)Defining Queer to an audience of practitioners from across the UK who are interested in queer museum practice.
“Queer Britain in London, the first LGBT museum in the country, will be hosting the symposium and I feel grateful to be talking about my practice there.”
