Poor Image Projects: Collision Grounds

As part of Index Festival 2019, Poor Image Projects presents Collision Grounds, an audiovisual installation and performance by Joanne Armitage and BA Fine Art alumna Anya Stewart-Maggs.

Collaborating for the first time, this one-night event brings together their separate practices of live coding and filmmaking as an installation and live performance. Pairing electronic sounds with visual footage of various landscapes, the artists aim to draw out the tactile, repetitive, and shifting patterns that occur in both nature and digital technology

Joanne Armitage is an internationally recognised live coder and contributes to groups including laptop ensemble, OFFAL and algo-pop duo ALGOBABEZ. In 2019 she curated SXSW’s first Algorave supported by Lush, PRS Foundation and British Underground. Recent projects include a coding cultural exchange between Yorkshire and Tokyo funded by Arts Council England, British Council, Daiwa Foundation and Sasakawa Foundation. As part of British Council’s Amplify programme she gave a workshop-performance at Mutek Argentina. In 2018 she was recipient of Sound and Music’s Composer-Curator fund and is a resident at Somerset House Studios.

Anya Stewart Maggs is an artist and filmmaker based in Leeds. A BA Fine Art alumna, she runs Poor Image Projects (PIP) alongside artist and practice-led PhD candidate Bethan Hughes. She is currently part of the Into the Wild 2019 programme at Chisenhale Studios, London, and has previously exhibited work at East Bristol Contemporary, UK, Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun, UK, and Lemvig Cinema, Denmark. As a filmmaker she has documented events, workshops and performances of artists, musicians and technologists.

Poor Image Projects (PIP) is a nomadic event series showcasing experimental moving image and audiovisual art. Hosting screenings, performances and installations, PIP unfolds in various spaces in Leeds and beyond.

This event is supported by Leeds Inspired and Arts Council England with equipment kindly provided by Lumen. Additional thanks go to Assembly House, Jamie Hudson and photographer Jules Lister.
