Tinnitus, musical listening and musical labour - Music Research Colloquia

A presentation by Marie Thompson, The Open University.

Abstract

This talk examines the complex intersection of tinnitus, musical listening, and musical labour.

Beginning with Carl Craig’s sound installation Party/After Party, I identify an apparent tension between recent attempts to acknowledge ‘auraldiversity’, and the disablements caused by musical listening as labour.

Tinnitus requires us to address this tension: it reveals the capacity for harm embedded in musical labour, while also highlighting the need to rethink music’s ‘normate’ listener.
