A presentation by Maya Verlaak, Conservatoire of Amsterdam.

Abstract

Giving the musicians full insight into the compositional processes has always been a very important parameter in my compositional work. This means that a musician understands the musical relationships and the parameters that communicate the concept.

I can fully trust the musician and give them freedom to further explore the material as part of the performance.  I develop methods that keep the musical material and compositional structure complex and submerge the performers in it. The performers become part of the complexity and can play with it. 

About Maya Verlaak

Maya Verlaak is a Belgian composer. Her works are intended to create space for critical thought; space for the individual audience members and performers to scrutinise the work.

Maya's works have been commissioned and performed by diverse ensembles such as Ensemble Klang (NL), Apartment House (UK), and many others.

Maya studied composition with a minor in Sonology at the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague (NL). In 2019 she was awarded a PhD from Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, funded by the AHRC Midlands3Cities Doctoral Training Partnership. She has been composition professor at the Conservatoire of Amsterdam since 2018.
