A Convenient Place for our Rehearsal: Sam Belinfante in conversation with Griselda Pollock

Join Artist in Residence Sam Belinfante and art historian Griselda Pollock as they discuss ideas of theatricality, gesture and music within contemporary visual arts.

As well as reflecting on Belinfante’s residency at Sir John Soane's Museum, Sam and Griselda will also ponder their many collaborations while working together with an intergenerational chorus of artists at the University of Leeds as part of the Centre for Audio Visual Experimentation (CAVE) and exploring the interface of making and thinking, creating and analysing.

The event will end with a drinks reception in the South Drawing Room.

About the speakers

Sam Belinfante is an artist living and working in London. Along with filmmaking and photographic work, his practice incorporates curating, sound and performance. Recent exhibitions include On the Heights, Yorkshire Sculpture Park (2017); This is a Voice at MAAS Sydney and Wellcome Collection, London (2016–17) and To the tintinnabulation that so musically wells, Radar at Loughborough’s Carillion (2018).

Recent performances include The Long, very long Journey with Laure Prouvost at Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna; Feedback at Palais De Tokyo, Paris (2017) and On the One Hand and the Other at Camden Art Centre where he was an artist in residence 2015–16. In 2021 Belinfante presented On the Circulation of Blood, a major sculptural and performance commission for Creative Folkestone Triennial. He is currently Artist in Residence at Sir John Soane's Museum, London (2023).

Griselda Pollock is Professor Emerita of Social & Critical Histories of Art at the University of Leeds and 2020 Laureate of the Holberg Prize.  She is an art historian and has curated several exhibitions of contemporary art including Art in the Space of Memory and Migration: Bracha L Ettinger in the Freud Museum (2013); with Sam Belinfante, Lessons in the Studio: Studio in the Seminar (Leeds, 2019-20) and currently Medium & Memory: Eight Artists in Conversation at HackelBury Fine Art, London  (7.09-21.10, 2023).

Her many publications include classics such as Old Mistresses; Women, Art & Ideology with Rozsika Parker (1981/ 2020), Vision and Difference (1988/2012), and Differencing the Canon: Feminist Desire and the Writing of Art’s Histories (1999),  Encounters in the Virtual Feminist Museum (2007),  After-Image/After-Affect: Trauma and Aesthetic Transformation in the Virtual Feminist Museum (2013), and more recently: Charlotte Salomon in the Theatre of Memory (Yale University Press 2018), Killing Men & Dying Women: Imagining Difference in 1950s New York Painting (MUP, 2022), Woman in Art: Helen Rosenau’s Little Book of 1944 (PMC, 2023).
