John Hammersley

Profile

I joined the University of Leeds as the School of Design’s Transformative Educator for Curriculum Redefined and Lecturer in Design Studies in 2022. I am the Director of Scholarship for the School of Design and member of the Imaginative Curriculum Centre steering group.

I have over twenty years’ experience teaching in higher education in art and design, teaching at institutions across the UK, and in Ireland and Malaysia. I have taught at Foundation, BA and PGT levels, in Fine Art, Graphic Design, Graphic Arts, and Illustration. I am also a qualified teacher of English to speakers of other languages and have taught pre-sessional English for Academic Purposes at Reading and Lancaster universities.

I obtained a PhD from Cardiff Metropolitan University in 2015 before undertaking a postdoctoral appointment at Lancaster University.

Research interests

My research is focused on applying dialogue as a framework for practice and understanding within art and design, the role of Design Thinking in curriculum transformation and approaches to integrating GenAI into creative pedagogy.

Student education

I teach onto the BA Art & Design Programme, and the Design Studies modules for the School of Design. I am also a final year dissertations tutor, drawing on my broad knowledge of art and design history, theory and practice, and experience as study skills tutor, and teacher of English for Academic Purposes.
