Textiles Design graduates featured in the Embroiderer’s Guild Magazine

Two of our 2016 Textiles Design Graduates, Emily Conroy and Emily Rhodes have had their work featured in the Sept/Oct issue of prestigious “Embroidery” Magazine.

The magazine, run by the Embroiderer’s Guild, brings the best of embroidery and textiles, talking to makers and stitchers who share a passion for embellishing the surface. Their graduate show work was featured as part of their 2016 graduate roundup.

It was Emily Conroy’s intricately decorated soft toys which saw her work featured within the magazine’s pages. Her decorated bears and rabbits were mainly inspired by feathers, using iridescent thread and textured mohair with various stitch types to offer a quirky edge to the work.

Speaking about her work, Conroy explained: “The contrast between lightweight, fluffy feathers and harsher materials is represented through material choices. The end products are bespoke soft toys, designed for decorative use only.”

Her work has also been selected for ‘Arts Thread Selects’ at Handmade at Kew in October.

Emily Rhode’s specialises in hand embroidery and it was her bright floral inspired embroidery against white pleated fabric which caught the magazines eye.
