Dr Judith Tucker selected for Contemporary Masters from Britain exhibition in China

Work by artist Dr Judith Tucker, senior lecturer in the School of Design, has been selected for Contemporary Masters from Britain: 80 British Painters of the 21st Century, a major survey show in China which will tour until 30 December 2017.

Tucker’s work explores questions of social history, personal memory and landscape and will be shown among 80 works, all drawn from the Priseman Seabrook Collection of 21st century British Painting. The curated selection is touring across four Chinese art museums travelling from Yantai Art Museum, to Artall Jiangsu and Jiangsu Art Museum, and on to Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts Museum. A catalogue essay written by Dr Tucker has been published in the accompanying publication Contemporary Masters From Britain.

“Painting and painters have demonstrated extraordinary staying power in Britain. The paintings that result take on as diverse a variety of visual forms as the places they were made in, but all share integrity, vitality and a preoccupation with what painting can offer at the beginning of the twenty-first century,” comments Dr Tucker.

“The exhibition’s strength is precisely that it is eclectic, bringing together not only a mix of geographies and generations, but creating surprising visual and material juxtapositions.”

She will also be delivering a public talk on the subject of British painting in Nanjing, alongside lectures on her own practice at the University of Hangzou and Xi’an Academy of Fine Art.  An additional informal solo exhibition of Dr Tucker’s works on paper, organised through Xi’an Academy of Fine Art, will go on show the Man Jiang Hong Art district and aims to foster links between the School of Design and the institutions.
