Professor announced as the new President of the Society of Dyers and Colourists
The ceremony took place at the SDC’s annual Day of Celebration.
Professor Stephen Westland has been announced as the new President of the SDC (Society of Dyers and Colourists).
Professor Westland joined the SDC in 1991, and was a member of the University of Leeds student section. He is currently an active member of the North of England Region.
He obtained his BSc and PhD from the University of Leeds in the 1980s. He then held academic posts at the universities of Keele and Derby before being appointed as Professor of Colour Science and Technology in 2003 at the University of Leeds in the School of Design. During his time at Leeds he has held several management positions including Head of School of Design (2006-2013) and Acting Faculty Dean (2013). He has published over 150 peer-reviewed book chapters, journal papers and conference proceedings in the areas of colour measurement, colour imaging and colour design. He received the Davies Medal from the Royal Photographic Society (2008) for his research into digital colour imaging and is a Senior Adjunct Scientist at the University of Texas Dental School (2010-). He is a member of the International Advisory Board of the Colour and Imaging Institute and Tsinghua University in China (2010-).
Professor Westland commented: “I feel very proud to be elected as President of the SDC. Although I have achieved a number of academic distinctions, the role of SDC President is special because the SDC is a membership organisation for professionals working in coloration, many of whom have had long and distinguished careers in industry. It is exciting for me to take on this role at a time when the SDC has a new regional organisation. Expansion of the SDC to new geographic areas is important and I hope I can help to identify and develop further opportunities for the SDC during my year as President and beyond.”
