Success for Leeds design students in the Graduate Fashion Week Awards
Graduate Fashion Week 2018 took place in London between the 3rd and 6th June.
The four day event celebrates the work of students and graduates studying fashion across the UK and around the world. It attracts 30,000 visitors each year and includes a number of catwalk shows, University exhibitions and talks and workshops from fashion industry leaders. The Graduate Fashion Week awards are presented at the acclaimed Gala Award show and entries from students studying at over 30 UK Universities are judged by industry experts. We are delighted that students from the School of Design have picked up a fantastic 5 awards at this prestigious event.
The awards our students won were:
ASOS Fashion Communications Award – 1st prize Maisie Clare, 2nd prize Imogen Potter
Fashion Photography award – Su Shan
ASOS emerging talent portfolio of the year – Charlotte Heeley
TU Sainsbury’s menswear designer of the year – Molly Hopwood
Dr Claire Watson, Senior Teaching Fellow and Programme Leader for the BA Fashion Marketing degree was in London and saw the students receive their awards. She said “Asos are one of the market leaders in online fashion and have contributed greatly to how consumers interact with and buy fashion products.We are delighted that our students have gained recognition from these experts for their advanced understanding of Fashion Communications. Both of their projects tackled important societal issues (digital overload and sustainability), using the medium of fashion to communicate with the consumer and encourage change”
Winner Maisie Clark said “I’m so thrilled to have won the ‘ASOS Future Talent Communication’ competition at Graduate Fashion Week. It’s such a great way for students to showcase final year work and I am so happy that I was able to show my creativity alongside my peers. I was especially thankful to win in this category as the project was something that I am very passionate about and am proud of!”
Su Shan, winner of the fashion photography award, said “I feel extremely grateful to have won a Graduate Fashion Week award. Winning the competition as a stylist has given me the opportunity to work with Victoria Koydl, the winning photographer from Ravensbourne University and Cecilie (Editor-In-Chief) to create a beautiful editorial piece using the Graduates’ Menswear Collection in the PR showroom. It was an eye-opening experience for me and I felt extremely proud to be able to represent the University.”
The achievements in the degree show are yet another example of the excellent standard of work produced by students here in the School of Design and we are very proud of all are students. We look forward to seeing the work of all our graduating students at our annual degree show which opens on Friday 15th June.
